Guernica, an online magazine of art and politics, has published a noteworthy short story in their June edition. Entitled Nixon’s Nose by Xiaoda Xiao, it’s a bleak tale of absurdity in a Chinese prison camp during the Cultural Revolution. A camp prisoner dreams one night of Mao Zedong sitting down with Richard Nixon and signing an order releasing the nation’s political prisoners. Consequences ensue.
It’s a worthwhile read, short and straightforward. It won’t leave you feeling good, but it does provide a snapshot of a horrible time and place in China’s history.
